Along with the Underwater Council of Alberta, the Edmonton Underwater Hockey club runs a high school program which includes up to two instructors and enough fins, masks, snorkels, gloves, sticks and pucks for up to thirty students.  This program is targeted at teaching kids how to snorkel and is typically used as a fun way for kids to learn how to snorkel and use flippers/fins before doing a PADI diving program.

The fees are as follows (pricing updated as of 2023):

  • Comprehensive – $21 per student (GST is another $1.05) for a two hour session, at the teacher’s pool of choice, each hour back to back, or more typically, on two separate days.  Skills include:
    • two ways of clearing the snorkel
    • clearing a mask of fog
    • equalizing ear pressure
    • A set of underwater hockey skills including:
      • puck handling
      • shooting a puck
      • back side stick handling.
      • offensive and defensive formations
      • how to cycle with teammates.
    • Includes a fifteen to twenty minute hockey game each hour, depending on fitness.
  • Basic – $17 per student (GST adds another 85 cents) for a one hour session, at the teacher’s pool of choice.  Skills include
    • two ways of clearing the snorkel
    • clearing a mask of fog
    • equalizing ear pressure
    • a set of underwater hockey skills including puck handling.
    • Includes a fifteen to twenty minute hockey game depending on fitness.

Notes:

  • Any Edmonton school can book pool time at any Edmonton pool for free. When booking your pool time, please book three or more lanes as two lanes is too narrow.
    • Schools are responsible for booking the pool time and transportation to and from the pool.  UWH instructors will meet you on deck.
  • The minimum is 15 students per class
  • Teachers are encourage to get in the pool and play for free.
  • Basic swimming skills are required.
  • Instructors will travel to other areas of Alberta, although a higher minimum number of students is required to cover costs.
  • After each class, an invoice is generated and emailed to the teacher, who can forward it to their administration.  Payment can be made through check or Paypal.

Example: Comprehensive

A typical class might include 22 kids, eighteen of whom end up in the pool and the session would cost 18 kids x $21 per kids plus a dollar oh five for GST for a total of $396.90.

Example: Basic

A typical class might include 25 kids, twenty of whom up in the pool and the session would cost 20 kids  x $17.85/kid for a total of $446.25.

Example: Basic with Twelve Students

With only twelve kids, the minimum is paid at 15 kids for a total of 15 x $17.85 = $267.75
